PROGRAM STUDY MODELS

From our program collages of what we wanted to include in our designs, we developed three models to abstractly represent them. Since my design is a sports recreation center, I can up with these three study models. The first depicts a gum wrapper and a paper mesh. I wanted to show a sports field so the mesh represents  turf (which a lot of sports are played on) and the wrapper represents cleats which are used to play the sports. The second model depicts two wood sticks and a mesh connecting the two. This model show both my program and also connection; it represents the connection players on the same team have. Without that connection they would not be able to play to their full capabilities together. The third model depicts a wooden ball and paper mesh draped over it. The ball represents the sports that is being played and the mesh represents the fans. This is represented like this because all sports that are played, take place lower than and in the middle of their fans.

CONNECTION STUDY MODELS

From my collage designed by the inspiration of connection, I came up with these three study models. The first model represents the telescope and the bridge connecting two separate areas of a space, like I feel the water connects both Brooklyn and Manhattan. The second model represents the Olympics and molecule images. It shows two different caps, one on the surface and the other breaking through, with a paperclip connecting  the two. This depicts how although people from the other side of the world consider each other different, were are all the same in a way. The third model represents the chain and how it connects something to amother material. It depicts the connection on the top and bottom surfaces.

SITE FEELING STUDY MODELS

When we visited the site, I had the feeling of loneliness, sadness and abandonment. From those feelings we had to design a collage that represented those feelings abstractly.
Model 1 depicts popsicle sticks breaking through the surface descending in height, and a gum wrapper. This represents the feeling I had as we moved toward the very sad and gloomy site. The sticks height signify the feeling as we moved toward the site, and the gum wrapper (garbage) signifies the abandoned feeling.
Model 2 depicts a tall popsicle stick looking down on two other sticks low to the floor. The tall popsicle stick represents the tall factories that seemed to be abandoned, and the smaller sticks closer to the ground represent the sad feeling that was felt on the site.

Model 3 depicts a single circular stick and a mesh that comes over it. This represents my lonely, abandoned feeling. The lonely stick represents a graffiti artist, mainly because they work alone. A lot of graffiti is found on abandoned buildings, because there is usually no security, or walking traffic around the area. The mesh round him represents his flow of ideas, that is capturing him to the site keeping him lonely.

PROGRAM/ BUBBLE DIAGRAM

This diagram represents the type of rooms that I will use in my design process. It depicts the room square footage, if the room has public access/ privacy and daylight, plumbing fixtures and equipment involved.

REVISED COLLAGES

These are the re-worked collages from the comments i have received during our pin up. I was portraying my ideas to literally; and didn't show myself enough in them, so I made them a little more abstract.

The feeling I had when we visited the sight is abandoned, but I also felt lonely and cold. The feeling of loneliness was caused by the lack of activities going on around the site, and the fact that it was filled with vacant factories. For that reason I included a person in the ocean by themselves, a man on the moon looking towards earth, the forever alone meme and Meg Griffin (Family Guy). The coldness i felt is displayed by the photo depicting a cold rainy day and a bench with no one on it on a winter night. The feeling of abandonment is depicted by the graffiti on the walls of an abandoned factory.

When thinking of the feeling of connection with the site certain images came into my head. The pictures showing the chain, the paper clips, the hands and the bridge are representing the physical connections we have in our lives. The telescope shows our connection with things that are far from us, The Olympics shows our connections with people from around the world, and the molecules which are present in all living and non-living things, shows hows everyone and everything is connected.

My program depicts the activities that I am going to be involving in my design. Since I want to design a Sports/ Recreation Center mostly sports icons are shown. For the sports involved have cleats, a football jersey, a fishing rod, a turf field and soccer fans. For the store inside the center I depicted the Modell's and Nike logo because the store will have sport supplies. And the drunk man depicts the sports bar that will be located on the premises as well.

CONNECTION

Being that the site is surrounded by water and its location, I feel that the site has a connection to the City through the River. At the corner of my site you can see Ferries pass by, the Statue of Liberty, and Lower Manhattan, making a strong connection between Red Hook and all of New York.

SITE IMPRESSION

On the day that we visited the site, it was a miserable day; it was cold and raining. The area was very deserted and it gave me a big sense of abandonment. There where no people walking around besides for a few and it looked like none of the factories were vacant.

PRIVATE VS. PUBLIC SPACES

APPROACH AND CIRCULATION

APPROACH AND CIRCULATION ARE ANOTHER SET OF CRUCIAL DESIGN ELEMENTS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING A SPACE. HOW A PERSON MOVES AROUND AND WITNESSES A SPACE CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS THOUGHT ABOUT BY A DESIGNER. A BEAUTIFUL DESIGN CAN BE RUINED BY MAKING A BUILDING'S CIRCULATION DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE.
